Abstract:
The aims of this proposal are two-folds: to research on an object finder for the visually impaired (VI) and to guide the VI to reach such an object, making use of the Computer Vision technique.
For a few decades, computer scientists and engineers have attached cameras to a computer and attempt to teach a machine to see. Great success has been achieved in controlled environment when the lighting and background can be controlled. The problem remains unsolved in uncontrolled places, in particular, when objects are placed in arbitrary poses in cluttered and occluded environment. In general, object recognition is a difficult process since it needs to recognize object category. For example, a car can come with different makes and shapes. To make the matter worse, a car can also come with particular painting or pattern on its body. The recognition of a particular car is not very interesting while the recognition of the car category is more meaningful and can find more useful applications. Researchers have employed learning technique to train a classifier to tackle this category recognition problem in controlled environment. However, few have tackled this problem in cluttered environment. So far, no effective solution has yet been found.
According to our aims, we propose to research on an object finder trained to recognize at least 20 common types of objects found in cluttered environment. The proposed guidance for the VI to reach an object should investigate the matching process from object physical space to the mental space of the VI. An intelligent HCI (human computer interface) employing multi-media processing is needed. For the recognition part, there are many good approaches for single object recognition in controlled environment but there is no working technique for multiple objects recognition in cluttered environment. Here, the proposed approach is based on the idea that human can identify and recognize an occluded object from a cluttered environment, provided that enough locally perceived clues and/or distinguishable portion of the object can be observed. This observation forms the core idea for this work to test and research on. The proposed work is relevant to world emphasis on assistive technology for the elderly and less fortunate. Furthermore the researched techniques can be readily employed on a robot to support work on service robot for elder care and domestic task. This is relevant and significant to industry in Malaysia.

well as Silicon Valley, describing how he landed a position in finance after
college, his experience thru the Credit Crisis of 2008, his move to Silicon Valley
after the financial crash, and his eventual return to New York.

Background of speaker: Ooi Chok Leang is currently Principal and Senior Project
Manager at Lab49, a technology consulting firm that builds advanced solutions for
the major investment banks and hedge funds on Wall Street. He is also Managing
Director at Agility IO, a consulting and outsourcing firm working with Silicon
Valley startups. Prior to the current roles, Chok Leang was Senior Development
Analyst at Goldman Sachs, and Assistant Vice President at Bank of America in New
York. Chok Leang also worked at a Silicon Valley startup called Loopt, where he
was a Server Development Manager. He also had the role as Chief Technology Officer
at Azap Mobile in San Francisco. Chok Leang graduated with a degree in Computer
Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin.

Title: Using semantic tables in XML query processing
Abstract: Processing a twig pattern query in XML document includes structural search and content search. Most existing algorithms only focus on structural search. They treat content nodes the same as element nodes during query processing with structural joins. Due to the high variety of contents, to mix content search and structural search suffers from management problem of contents and low performance. Another disadvantage is to find the actual values asked by a query, they have to rely on the original document. In this talk, we propose a novel algorithm Value Extraction with Relational Table (VERT) to overcome these limitations. The main technique of VERT is introducing relational tables to store document contents instead of treating them as nodes and labeling them. Tables in our algorithm are created based on semantic information of documents. As more semantics is captured, we can further optimize tables and queries to significantly enhance efficiency. Last, we show by experiments that besides solving different content problems, VERT also has superiority in performance of twig pattern query processing compared with existing algorithms. We also extend VERT to process queries involving ID references or general queries with multiple join-linked twig patterns and queries involving grouping and aggregations.

Abstract:
Radial basis functions have become an important tool for scattered data approximation, and theoretically can be used for approximation in
high dimensions. There is a very beautiful abstract theory of approximation involving so called native space (which I will not talk about). There is some interest in the finance industry in RBFs because of the possibility of high dimensional approximation and solution of partial differential equations. In this talk I will discuss some of the problems which arise with approximation with such functions, such as ill-conditioning and computation of full linear systems. I will offer some hope for the solution of these problems.

The research projects are "Microscopic Modeling of Drivers' Merging Behavior at Roundabouts under Oversaturated Condition" by UTAR Research Fund (UTARRF) and "The Novel Development of A Dynamic In-vehicle Guidance and Navigation System in Malaysia" by Exploratory Research Grant Scheme (ERGS). Abstract:
Multi-cameras networks have an important role in surveillance systems. In traditional cameras networks mainly based on static cameras. Static camera provides low resolution and poor image quality in modeling. At the meanwhile, Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) camera is able to obtain multi-angles of views and multi-resolution information; it provides more functionality compared with static camera. In multi-camera networks, they obtain two or more different perspectives views of scene to perform calibration within one another. Traditional approach to solve this problem is by using human inputs or referenced objects to find matched correspondences among all images. The recent works by some researchers have brought remarkable increase of automation to these problems. One of the main challenges in multi-cameras calibration is to obtain an accurate and fast estimation of disparities of two different views of scene. Besides disparities, differences might be caused by occlusion of the object, specular reflection, sensor noise and various other causes.
In this project, we designed and constructed a new hybrid camera system instead of using two static cameras. More precisely, our hybrid camera system consists of a static wide angle camera and a PTZ camera. Both cameras obtain different optical elements and resolutions. We proposed a master-slave concept to represent both cameras. A static camera is master camera with wide angle view is used to monitor the environment from a distance. The images taken from the master camera will be used as reference images. When the master camera detects an object of interest, the slave camera - PTZ camera, will zoom into the region of interest (ROI). PTZ camera plays an important role at pointing towards the ROI in high resolution as well as providing different parameters of PTZ values. Then, we studied and proposed calibration methods for the hybrid camera system. In particular, Scale Invariant Features Transform (SIFT) was used to identify keypoints to perform multiple views matching. One of the major contributions of this project is to design and develop a new smart filtering technique based on the principle of trigonometry, called Trigonometry Filter Technique (TFT). TFT is used to filter the false keypoints by calculating and classifying the orientation of the images. Furthermore, TFT also increases the determination and detection rate of ROI image localization. Secondly, we proposed a novel calibration method based on multiple-image stitching approach. By stitching images (by PTZ camera), a high resolution panorama image will be created. Finally, we are able to stitch and calibrate both static master camera and PTZ camera images without the use of any object as reference. By eliminating the use of reference objects, the obtained empirical results show good performance to handle images from various kinds of angles, scaled and target uncertainties.

Computers, communication, and sensing technologies are converging to change the way we live, interact, and conduct business. Wireless sensor networks reflect such convergence. These networks are based on collaborative efforts of a large number of sensor nodes. They should be low-cost, low-power, and multifunction. These nodes have the capabilities of sensing, data processing, and communicating. Sensor networks have a wide range of applications, from monitoring sensors in industrial facilities to control and management of energy applications to military and security fields. Because of the special features of these networks, new network technologies are needed for cost effective, low power, and reliable communication.
These network protocols and architectures should take into consideration the special features of sensor networks such as: the large number of nodes, their failure rate, limited power, high density, etc. In this talk the impact of wireless sensor networks will be addressed, several of the design and communication issues will be discussed, and a case study of a current project of using such networks in drilling and management off-shore oil and natural gas in the gulf region will be given.

Biography: Dr. Hiroshi Harada

Dr. Hiroshi Harada is the director of smart wireless laboratory at National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT). He joined the Communications Research Laboratory, Ministry of Posts and Communications, in 1995 (currently NICT). Since 1995, he has conducted research on Software Defined Radio (SDR), Cognitive Radio, Dynamic Spectrum Access Network, Smart Utility Network (SUN) and broadband wireless access systems in the VHF, TV white space, micro-wave and millimeter-wave bands. He has joined many standardization committees and forums in the United States as well as in Japan and has fulfilled important roles for them. He is currently serving in the board of directors of Wireless Innovation Forum (formerly SDR Forum). He is the chair of IEEE DySPAN Standards Committee (formerly, IEEE SCC41 and IEEE 1900) since 2009, the vice chair of IEEE P1900.4, IEEE P802.15.4g, and TIA TR-51 since 2008, 2009, and 2011, respectively. He was the chair of the IEICE Technical Committee on Software Radio (TCSR) in 2005-2007 and the chair of Public Broadband Mobile Communication Development Committee, ARIB since 2010. He is also involved in many other activities related to telecommunications. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo, Japan, since 2005 and is the author of Simulation and Software Radio for Mobile Communications (Artech House, 2002). He has received the achievement award and fellow of IEICE in 2006 and 2009, respectively and the achievement award of ARIB and Funai Prize for Science in 2009 and 2010, respectively, on the topic of cognitive radio research and development.

Biography: Dr. Chin-Sean Sum

Dr. Chin-Sean Sum received his Ph.D. degree from Niigata University in 2007. He was then affiliated with the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan as an expert researcher in the Smart Wireless Laboratory (SWL). He has been involved in multiple standardization activities as a project officer and an active technical contributor. In the IEEE 802.15.3c millimeter-wave wireless personal area networks (WPAN) standard, he served as the assistant technical editor and secretary of the task group. He is the recipient of the IEEE Working Group Chairs Awards for the IEEE 802.15.3c Standard. He then started to participate in

task groups IEEE 802.15.4g Smart Utility Networks (SUN) WPAN and IEEE 802.11af white space wireless local area networks (WLAN). In 802.15.4g, he is an active technical contributor and served as the editor of the coexistence assurance document. In 802.11af, he is an active technical contributor closely following the development of TV white space WLAN systems and related regulatory status. Currently, he is also actively involved in a new initiative group working on WPAN operating in TW white space, a group expected to be formed as IEEE 802.15.4m. Besides, he is an active contributor in other standardization groups such as Telecommunication Industry Association (TIA) TR-51 Smart Utility Networks, IEEE 802.19 Wireless Coexistence group and 802.22 wireless regional area networks (WRAN) group. His research works can be frequently found in major journals and conferences such as the IEEE J-SAC, ICC, WCNC, Globecom, DySPAN, VTC, IEEE Communications Magazine and so on. Currently, his research interest is focused on

MAC and PHY layer designs for TV white space and SUN systems, cognitive radio, coexistence and energy efficient mechanisms.

Biography

Victor C. M. Leung received the B.A.Sc. (Hons.) degree in electrical engineering from the University of British Columbia (U.B.C.) in 1977, and was awarded the APEBC Gold Medal as the head of the graduating class in the Faculty of Applied Science. He attended graduate school at U.B.C. on a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Postgraduate Scholarship and completed the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 1981.

From 1981 to 1987, Dr. Leung was a Senior Member of Technical Staff at MPR Teltech Ltd., specializing in the planning, design and analysis of satellite communication systems. In 1988, he was a Lecturer in the Department of Electronics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He returned to U.B.C. as a faculty member in 1989, where he is currently a Professor and holder of the TELUS Mobility Research Chair in Advanced Telecommunications Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is a member of the Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems at U.B.C. He also holds adjunct/guest appointments at Jilin University, Beijing Jiaotong University, South China University of Technology, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. Dr. Leung has co-authored more than 500 technical papers in international journals and conference proceedings, and several of these papers had been selected for best paper awards. His research interests are in the areas of architectural and protocol design, management algorithms and performance analysis for computer and telecommunication networks, with a current focus on wireless networks and mobile systems.

Dr. Leung is a registered professional engineer in the Province of British Columbia, Canada. He is a Fellow of IEEE, a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. He is a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Communications Society. He has served on the editorial boards of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications – Wireless Communications Series, the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, and is serving on the editorial boards of the IEEE Transactions on Computers, the Journal of Communications and Networks, Computer Communications, as well as several other journals. He has guest-edited several journal special issues, and served on the technical program committee of numerous international conferences. He is a General Co-chair of CSA 2011, Chinacom 2011, and MobiWorld and GCN Workshops at IEEE Infocom 2011. He chaired the TPC of the wireless networking and cognitive radio track in IEEE VTC-fall 2008. He was the General Chair of AdhocNets 2010, WC 2010, QShine 2007, and Symposium Chair for Next Generation Mobile Networks in IWCMC 2006-2008. He was a General Co-chair of BodyNets 2010, CWCN Workshop at Infocom 2010, ASIT Workshop at IEEE Globecom 2010, MobiWorld Workshop at IEEE CCNC 2010, IEEE EUC 2009 and ACM MSWiM 2006, and a TPC Vice-chair of IEEE WCNC 2005.

Talk #1: Service and Network Convergence in Next Generation Networks

Abstract: A common feature of contemporary wireless and wireline networks is that they provide access to or operate over IP-based networks. It is commonly agreed that next generation networks will consist of a conglomerate of access network technologies integrated by broadband IP-based core networks. Telecommunication service providers are taking advantage of the capabilities of next generation networks to offer a wide range of services to subscribers over a converged IP network regardless of the access technology. Research and development efforts over the last few years have been focused on how to integrate and manage heterogeneous wireless/wireline access networks for a good service experience by subscribers. The presentation will review features and characteristics of converged access networks, describe the network and service architectures enabling access network convergence on the one hand and service convergence on the other, and discuss some of the technical issues that need to be addressed to provide a good service experience to subscribers. Novel solutions for selection of the best access network before connection establishment, and maintaining a connection across different access networks by vertical handoffs will be presented. Future research directions will be discussed.

Talk #2: Networking of Automobiles – Applications, Challenges and Some Recent Results

Abstract: Recent advances in wireless communication technologies are making it possible for automobiles to be integrated into the global network. Intelligent Transportation Systems with vehicles in the loop are expected to significantly improve road safety, reduce traffic congestion and cut greenhouse gas emissions. This is made possible in the USA by Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC), which employs the IEEE 802.11p standard over the 75MHz of spectrum in the 5.9 GHz band allocated by the FCC for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. DSRC is expected to revolutionize road transportation by making possible many real-time safety applications. However, global deployment of DSRC is not expected to materialize in the near term due to regulatory and financial challenges. In the meantime, vehicles and their passengers are increasingly equipped with different forms of wireless networking capabilities, e.g., cellular, WiFi and WiMAX. Thus there is also a growing interest in supporting applications like infotainment, travel advisory, route planning, etc., using heterogeneous wireless networks. In this presentation, I shall describe several applications that leverage the wireless communications to put vehicles in the loop. Different applicants impose different requirements on the wireless network for data routing, transfer latency, etc. I shall review the technical challenges that need to be overcome to meet some of these requirements, and describe solutions developed in our recent research to meet these challenges. I shall conclude the presentation by discussing some future research directions.

对于许多学生来说，数学是一门深奥难懂的科目。面对一条条的数学公式和符号，学生们除了背死书之外就只能依靠重复练习和上补习课来补救。这种极尽痛苦的学习历程让很多学生对数学产生了焦虑。他们即使毕业后成为专业人士，但对数学的阴影终究是挥之不去。

追根究底，许多人对数学产生焦虑感多源自于数学抽象的概念和复杂的公式。但是数学教学的刻板与枯燥方式也成了捏杀学生的学习兴趣主凶之一。尤其是我国盛行的填鸭式教育，强调的是死背和重复练习已严重扭曲了因材施教的教育原则。此乃数学教育里必须去除的迷思之一。

我相信，数学的学习过程可以是生动有趣的，也并非一成不变。同样的一道数学题，往往可以有好几种的解答方式。而每一种方式都有其特征。要减少人们对数学的焦虑，就必须在教学中突出这些优美的特征，以轻松及生动的方式带出整个运算过程。

就以乘法(Multiplication)的运算为例子。许多人都是从熟背一至十二的乘法表开始，总共背诵了144个的方程式。但有多少人知道，其实我们的老祖宗比我们更聪明，他们只需要背诵78个就可以了。而如果我们懂得一些简单的数学公式，那我们要背诵的东西就会更少。

同样的道理，当孩子无法掌握学校教的那一套乘法时，老师和父母可以做些什么呢？继续强迫孩子死记硬背的把整套乘法，不管孩子能否消化；还是怒气冲冲地大骂孩子‘笨蛋’无可救药？师长们是否有想过用不同的乘法方式来教导孩子，也许效果会更好？请别把学校的那一套当作是唯一的和最好的标准。道理很简单；每个孩子好比不同的交通工具，如果是汽车，你总不能让它在水里游；换作是飞机，你也不能把它放到火车轨道行。

除了刻板的教学方式问题，近年来数学教育的发展也走向另一个让人担忧的方向，即越来越多的教育工作者和父母对快速计算(Fast Arithmetic)的迷思，总是希望孩子们能够在几秒内计算出类似题目的答案！答案正确还不够好，要‘快’才能进入神童榜。要清楚，快速计算只不过是把不同的技巧背熟再根据情况来运用而已，对于真正了解和掌握数学还差十万八千里。要快和准哪里需要这么辛苦每天拼命的练习，五支手指按一按计算机就可以了。再说，快速计算的高手也未必过得了高中数学考试，更别说成为数学家。相反地，这种讲究‘快速’的思维训练搞不好还会让孩子错过往扎实的基础下功夫。

今天的分享，不是也不可能改变以上所触及的两个数学教育的迷思。只是希望能提供一个不一样的选择让大家重新了解数学。我们会发现原来一个简单的乘法，可以有不同的演算方法；有的蛮有趣，有的很抽象，有的我明明会但从来没有好好地深入了解；有的那么容易为什么自己偏偏没想到。这种心情的起伏，能激发你更深入了解每一种方法背后的原理。

对于我来说，从今天的分享中学会多少种乘法并非最重要的。我更热切期望此分享能带来的启发：如学生们在学习课本上的东西后，自己是否能够创造出新方法和见解；老师们在教学上，能否加入一些新元素让教学更生动；父母们在亲子关系中，能否与孩子一同成长；及就业人士在工作岗位和人际关系上，是否能从不同的角度对待某件事物，而不再固执己见。

People with locked-in syndrome/severe motordisabilities such as those afflicted with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis may beunable to communicate with the outside world. In an earlier project, theprincipal investigator and his colleagues have developed a Brain-ComputerInterface (BCI) system to control a wheelchair using natural EEG oscillationsgenerated by motor imagery. This method of using motor imagery is very safe,reliable and at the same time frees the mind to observe and plan futureintensions while activating a wheelchair to move to the desired location.

However, for the purposes of communicationsuch as writing a letter or communicating with another person, we will need afaster information transfer rate. This can be provided by a complementary BCIsystem that uses steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP). In such asystem, the subject is required to look at objects (for example, that candenote the direction of movement of the curser) that oscillate at specificfrequencies resulting in evoked potentials of the same frequencies that can bemeasured at certain locations on the scalp. The frequencies of the evokedpotentials will determine the desired movement of the curser that can be usedto select words in a predictive text system to form the desired phrases orsentences to communicate with the outside world.

The RA is required to participate in aresearch team to develop the software for the SSVEP BCI system and thepredictive text algorithm and selection GUI for communication. An example ofpredictive text is commonly seen in hand phone sms features. O'Riordan et. al.investigated the text input methods for mobile phones. Predictive text can becomplemented by "auto completion" or "auto tree" dependingon context and structure of the sentence. Steffen Bickel et. al. investigatesalgorithms that enable the finding of meaningful subwords and phrases.

Title: Robust Fitting and Model Selection in Computer Vision
Abstract: One of the earliest examples of robust model fitting in Computer Vision is to detect lines and curves in images using the Hough Transform (Duda and Hart, 1972). Since then robust model fitting techniques have become part of the standard toolbox for Computer Vision researchers and practitioners, especially on geometry estimation problems where approaches like RANSAC dominate. Robustness is crucial in many cases as the data acquisition and preprocessing pipeline is inevitably imperfect, and this introduces outliers and noise into the data. A second important aspect is model selection, especially in the case of multiple structures, i.e. how many lines do we have in the image? Traditional model selection techniques dictate that the best model is the one that balances goodness of fit and model complexity. In this talk I will discuss ongoing work at The University of Adelaide to find new paradigms for robust model fitting and model selection. In particular I will report recently proposed methods that cast robust model fitting and model selection as statistical learning problems. These new methods offer the promise of more robustness and applicability to a wider range of problems.
Speaker Bio:
Dr Tat-Jun Chin is a Lecturer in the School of Computer Science at The University of Adelaide. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Systems Engineering from Monash University, and B.Eng in Mechatronics from the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Dr Chin's current research focusses on robust model fitting approaches for Computer Vision applications. In particular he is interested in searching for new paradigms for the fundamental underpinning of robust model fitting approaches, and to extend the applicability of robust model fitting approaches to a wider range of problems and operating conditions.

Abstract: Multimedia forensics arises from a question as old as photography: When is seeing is believing. Today, images and videos are as commonly exchanged and shared as are text messages when Internet was first invented. Visual content has become inseparable from our daily communications and is increasingly used as personal records or evidence in courts of law. I will introduce multimedia forensics and describe the open problems awaiting answers.
I will also briefly talk about a different research topic in computer vision and graphics known as inverse light transport. Light transport is function that maps the light sources and the images. Inverse light transport can be considered a general framework for tackling low-level computer vision problems and the research is still at its infancy. I will introduce the related early works and the open problems.
Speaker Bio:
Tian-Tsong Ng is a research scientist in Institute for Infocomm Research, Singapore. He received his B.Eng in Electrical Engineering from University of Malaya in 1998, his M.Phil. in Signal Processing from Cambridge University in 2001 and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University in 2007. His research interest lies in computer vision, computer graphics and image forensics.
He won the Microsoft Best Student Paper Award at ACM Multimedia Conference in 2005, the John Wiley & Sons Best Paper Award at the first IEEE Workshop in Information Security and Forensics in 2009 and I2R Best Paper Award in 2010. He is a Commonwealth Scholar and an A*STAR Overseas Graduate Scholar.

Prof. Kenny Paterson is a professor in the Information Security Group at Royal Holloway, University of London, one of the most prestigious security and cryptography groups in Europe. Since March 2010, he has been employed full-time as an EPSRC Leadership Fellow with the fellowship entitled "Cryptography: Bridging Theory and Practice".

His main area of research is Cryptography, with broader interests in Information Security and the mathematics of communications systems. Kenny completed his Ph.D. at Royal Holloway in 1993, and was then a Royal Society fellow at Institute for Signal and Information Processing at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich from 1993 to 1994. After that, he was a Lloyd's of London Tercentenary Foundation Research Fellow at Royal Holloway from 1994 to 1996. He then worked at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, Bristol from 1996 to 2001, before rejoining Royal Holloway in 2001. Kenny is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Cryptology, was program chair for Eurocrypt 2011, and consults widely to industry and governments.

Title: Development of Job Matching Algorithm with Collective Learning Methods
Abstract:

Hiring or job match placing the wrong job seekers to the particular job posted by the employers is a costly mistake. As it is the key to keep the job site remain competitive. The classical online recruiting applications use only simple Boolean operations comparing the basic requirement information to generate the job matched results to job seekers. Therefore, it's often claimed to be irrelevant job matched or too many "hits" [1]. Job seekers must browse through a long list of job advertisements in a given query [2]. The problem of the classical method is about the data modelling. Job seekers need to fill up massive form-based basic requirement information. The data given is too subjective to define its importance. Hence, the matching may not be good. Besides, online recruiting application must be able to discover interesting jobs for recommendation. Job seekers are more likely excited to see a range of different job types in which really match his or her working profiles and own interests. This is the area addressed by this research described in this thesis. An investigation and development of a different method of job matching algorithm was undertaken. The primary objective of this research is to offer an intelligence job matching mechanism incorporated the relevant feedback approach. Real data (job title, job descriptions and job requirements of 3000 job advertisements) from Jobstreet will be pursued with detailed analysis for the validation of the proposed method.

Abstract: Computing is being transformed to a model consisting of services that are commoditised and delivered in a manner similar to utilities such as water, electricity, gas, and telephony. In such a model, users access services based on their requirements without regard to where the services are hosted. Several computing paradigms have promised to deliver this utility computing vision. Cloud computing is the most recent emerging paradigm promising to turn the vision of "computing utilities" into a reality.

Cloud computing has emerged as one of the buzzwords in the ICT industry. Several IT vendors are promising to offer storage, computation and application hosting services, and provide coverage in several continents, offering Service-Level Agreements (SLA) backed performance and uptime promises for their services. It delivers infrastructure, platform, and software (application) as services, which are made available as subscription-based services in a pay-as-you-go model to consumers. The price that Cloud Service Providers charge can vary with time and the quality of service (QoS) expectations of consumers.

This talk (1) presents the 21st century vision of computing and identifies various IT paradigms promising to deliver the vision of computing utilities; (2) defines the architecture for creating market-oriented Clouds by leveraging technologies such as VMs; (3) provides thoughts on market-based resource management strategies that encompass both customer-driven service management and computational risk management to sustain SLA-oriented resource allocation; (4) presents Aneka, a software system for rapid development of Cloud applications and their deployment on private/public Clouds with resource provisioning driven by SLAs and user QoS requirements, (5) reports experimental results on deploying Cloud applications in engineering, gaming, and health care domains on private or public Clouds, and (6) concludes with the need for convergence of competing IT paradigms for delivering our 21st century vision along with pathways for future research.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Rajkumar Buyya is Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering; and Director of the Cloud Computing and Distributed Systems (CLOUDS) Laboratory at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He is also serving as the founding CEO of Manjrasoft., a spin-off company of the University, commercializing its innovations in Cloud Computing. He has authored 350 publications and four text books. He also edited several books including "Cloud Computing: Principles and Paradigms" recently published by Wiley Press, USA. He is one of the highly cited authors in computer science and software engineering worldwide.

Software technologies for Grid and Cloud computing developed under Dr. Buyya's leadership have gained rapid acceptance and are in use at several academic institutions and commercial enterprises in 40 countries around the world. Dr. Buyya has led the establishment and development of key community activities, including serving as foundation Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable Computing and five IEEE/ACM conferences. Kok Keong Loo a.k.a Jonathan Loo received his MSc degree in Electronics (with Distinction) from University of Hertfordshire, UK in 1998 and the PhD degree in Electronics and Communications from the same university in 2003. Between August 2003 and May 2010, he was a Lecturer in Multimedia Communications at the School of Engineering and Design, Brunel University, UK. Currently, he is a Reader (Associate Professor) at the School of Engineering and Information Sciences, Middlesex University, UK. At Brunel, he was a Course Director for the MSc in Digital Signal Processing programme. He also involved in several research projects where he was a Principal Investigator for a joint research project between BBC and Brunel University on Dirac video codec research and development, and a co-investigator for several European funded projects namely IST FP6 PLUTO IST FP6 ENABLE, and recently the IST FP7 3D-Vivant. So far, he has successfully supervised 10 PhDs as the Director of Studies. His research interests are in the general area of multimedia communications include visual media processing, video coding and transmission, wireless communications, digital signal processing, embedded systems and wireless network, protocols and security. In the past 7 years, he published in total of 128 publications (book chapters, journals, conferences) in the aforementioned areas. Recently, he has completed an edited book called "Mobile Ad Hoc Networks: Current Status and Future Trends" which will be published by CRC Press.

Abstract
In recent years, business intelligence (BI) has emerged as one of the top technology priorities for many worldwide organizations. BI acts as a source of competitive advantage to support key business processes that could affect an organization’s bottom line. Despite of the apparent significance of BI, many organizations still have not successfully gained full benefits from their BI investment. The contributing reasons are the lack of higher level analytics and intelligent functions, insufficient business involvement, absence of skilled staff, and poor data quality. Apparently, an organization needs to be in a higher level of maturity to reap full benefits of BI. However, for organizations to be able to evolve to a higher maturity level, it will require them to identify their position in the BI journey and know how to attain to the next level. To address these two issues, this research intends to develop a maturity model containing dimensions that are critical to the implementation of BI. For each dimension, it will spell out criteria to move from the lowest level of maturity all the way to the highest level of maturity. Having this maturity model as guidance to assess existing BI capabilities, organizations are assured that they can effectively devise a systematic plan to achieve higher BI maturity level. In this research, data will be collected using a mixed method of structured survey questionnaire and follow-up interviews. Based on the extensive literature review, an initial version of survey instrument will be developed using questionnaire and pilot-tested on five selected Malaysian organizations across a wide variety of industries. Then, the preliminary BI maturity model will be produced and further validated. The sample of actual survey is estimated to have at least 30 participants. It is believed that the results of the research will provide useful guidelines to move forward to expand the business value of the BI implementation. As such, BI stakeholders will be in a better position to discover existing problems and optimize their scarce resources by focusing on critical dimensions that have a greater impact on BI implementation.

Abstract:
Nowadays, thievery is a common crime in the world. It can happen
anytime, from morning to night and anywhere from housing area to
public places. It makes the people feel so unsafe when they cannot
look after their valuable items such as travelling, out of home and so
on. Therefore, surveillance systems are employed at many places to
reduce the chance of the thievery happen. But normally be surveillance
systems need to be monitored by single operator. When human explore to
this kind of work for long time, they will be tire and easy make
mistake when then probability to miss dangerous situation will
increase. Thus, a semiautomatic surveillance system can be used to
help operator to detect thievery crime by giving some intelligences to
the system.
The major problem of surveillance systems is they normally only can
record the video and some of them able to detect there have something
moving in the scene. But the systems lack of the ability to detect and
track interest objects and human in video scene. When human and
objects can be tracked then further analysis can be done more
efficiently. Besides this, the systems also lack of the ability to
determine the person that take away the interested object. If the
system cannot give alert immediately, there will be a chance that the
thief can escape from scene.
This proposed system aims to address the above issues, which included
detect all interested objects in the scene at beginning of the video,
detect and track human in scene, and define the relationship between
human and interested objects in term of remove the object and occlude
the object. Besides this, the system aimed to run in 24 hours per day
which met the requirement of a standard surveillance system.
The proposed system can be divided to three modules, which are
foreground detection, human tracking and object removal detection. In
the scene, there will be a lot of interested objects and uninterested
objects. Foreground detection module will extract interested
foreground objects from background when the video start. After the
interested object detection in first module, all the interested
objects will be keeping tracked to use in object removal module. The
human tracking module will keep track on human who go into the video
scene until they are out of the scene. In object removal module, when
someone takes the interested objects in scene, the event should be
detected and the system able to tell which person took the objects.
This module also needs detect someone only occludes an interested
object but he/ she does not take away the object.
In conclusion, the proposed system aimed to detect and give alert when
people trying steal valuable items. It can help improve security level
in our society and lead us to have a better harmony environment.

Title: Unattended Object Detection Base on Video Surveillance Camera
Abstract
Nowadays, the awareness of terrorist attack prevention are becoming a
concerning issue in Malaysia. Many countries are also implementing
various security measurements to prevent terrorist attack. Setting up
surveillance cameras in strategic areas is one of the latest effective
measurements employed to detect such activities, where there are
surveillance cameras already set up everywhere, for instance,
government offices, airport terminals, car parks, staircases.
However, in order to monitor all the video scenes captured by the
surveillance cameras, it requires considerable human resource and
time. This project choose to detect unattended object, the main reason
is in a scene of surveillance cameras, the unattended object stay
static mostly all the time, and it's very hard to draw the attention
of the security personnel.
Hence, this project attempts to develop a system that is able to
automate the detection of possible occurrence of unattended object,
and hence alert the security personnel to pay attention to the
detected event, eventually some adequate measures can be carry out, to
minimize the probability of unpleasant incident to happen.
To develop a system that is able to widely implement, the system must
not required high resolution video image, where currently most of the
surveillance camera are low resolution or even maybe only able to
capture greyscale video. Processing high resolution video image will
also require higher processing power, or the efficiency of the system
will be affected. Hence, implement high resolution video image will
increase the implementing cost by increasing camera cost and also
processing unit cost.
The project proposes a human-object interaction analysis system that
detects human-object interaction, and the detected human-object
interaction will be monitored in the system. If the human-object
distance is too far, after a period of time, the object will be
considered as unattended object. The unattended object will be marks
up by the system, and the object owner will also be keep tracked.
In this project, the system dealing with human and object in a video
sequence, in most of the time, human and object will occlude each
other. The system scope will cover until object partially occlusion,
where fully occlusion include more uncertainty.

Synopsis:

In today's global economy, companies aggressively fund universities and research labs to bring in fundamental innovations. Innovation becomes a priority especially through government-industry-academia collaboration scheme as the global interconnected networks reach commercial maturity in late-1990s, when the Internet came into existence. This can only be accomplished through close-knit research and development programs. For example, we see mobile phone is being developed into a mobile Internet. But innovations do not stop here. It will continue to grow. Why? Because the future of mobile communications still requires many technologies to be developed to handle huge data volumes. The evolution of devices through easy to use interfaces, e.g., touchscreen, has generated huge data traffic which needs to be efficiently managed. Content services via digital network have emerged, such as cloud computing, and are likely to take over as the primary way of content consumption around the world. Just like water or electricity which is readily available when moving into a new home, the basic access to content will be bundled into access to digital networks. This is already happening with the development of key technologies. In the future, it is possible that mobile telecommunication technologies will become one of the biggest innovation surges in business and private communication. This talk discuss some well funded innovations and key technologies that reflect the technological sophistication from pre-Internet era to post-Internet era and provide an overview of future research and development efforts in Korea.

Abstract:
The global demand for high-performance computing and mobile Internet
connectivity continues to escalate as the appetite for media contents
grows. This demand, combined with the growing emphasis on small form
factor, is driving the need for System-on-Chip (SoC) design. This talk
will focus on the technology drivers, characteristics and challenges
of SOC design and development. The presentation will also describe
Intel's strategy in delivering a new category of smart SoC designs as
well as the design teams which deliver them.
Biography:
Dr. Ong Sze Wei is senior microprocessor design manager of Intel
Penang Design Center (PDC). He joined Intel in 2002 and has led
multiple design automation domains of Intel Atom(tm), Pentium(r) and
Core(tm) microprocessor projects. He is also the program manager of
Intel Technical Development Work Group where he champions strategic
training and development initiatives for the design teams in Malaysia.
In this capacity, Dr. Ont founded Intel-MDEC Advanced VLSI
Train-The-Trainer Program for 18 universities in Malaysia. He also
co-founded Northern Corridor Analog and Digital Design Program, which
is a catalyst program for developing advanced analog and digital
design engineers for the northern region of Malaysia. Dr. Ong is the
industry advisor for Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Tunku Abdul
Rahman and Universiti Tenaga Nasional. He received his bachelor's,
master's and doctorate degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering
from the University of Tennessee, U.S.A.

Abstract:

The objective of this project is to research and develop a learning-based license plate detection framework with Spatial Horizontal Edge Variation features. As the growing of vehicle usage and the importance of automation in license plate recognition, license plate detection is one of the essential modules in the automation system. There are many existing algorithms available in the market in finding the license plate; in this project we introduce a framework that will learn from the image dataset and generate a set of classifiers to detect the targeted object. We tested our proposed framework on Malaysian vehicle license plate detection, and further experiment on Text detection. Spatial Horizontal Edge Variation feature is a simplified edge feature that can extract the edge information of the object through the horizontal orientation to differentiate between license plate and non license plate. Our framework selects a set of best features from a large set of feature set and generates a linear tree classifier to perform the object detection. From our experiments and analysis, we found that vehicle license plates have similarity with text that consist several characters. The changes of the edge information from the left to right horizontally through the license plate can actually provide useful information to distinguish whether it is a license plate or otherwise. In our project, we did further testing on the framework for detecting text from natural scene and side view car detection. For our license plate detector, we tested with some of the Malaysian vehicle license plate and achieve recall rate of 0.93796 and precision rate of 0.55366.

Abstract of the talk
The Digital Imaging Research Centre will be introduced. Two projects
led by the speaker at Kingston University will be introduced. The
first one a three partner consortium funded by the US Department on
homeland security on augmented video surveillance with the use of
robotic platforms and the second a UK wide project with a consortium
of three sites aimed at the development of pattern recognition methods
for the automatic classification of plants through the analysis of
leaf characters. The latter is a an effort with the collaboration of
the Royal Botanic gardens at Kew.

Biography
Dr Paolo Remagnino (1993, PhD, IEEE and AAAI member) is a Reader in
the Faculty of Computing, Information Systems and Mathematics at
Kingston University and research associate with Royal Botanic gardens
at Kew. Dr Remagnino is a researcher in image and video understanding
and one of the main promoters of intelligent and autonomous
environments. Dr Remagnino is an editor member of the Expert Systems,
the Image and Vision Computing, the International Journal of Robotics
and Automation, Pattern Analysis and Application and the IEEE
Transactions of Automation, Science and Engineering. His research
interests include image processing, computer vision, machine learning,
artificial intelligence and robotics. Dr Remagnino has published a
numerous number of papers in scientific journals and conferences and
is the editor of 4 book collections, published with Springer, in the
field of video surveillance and ambient intelligence.

Abstract

The research frontier of human machine interaction is pushed forward by inventions and integrations of robotics and medical electronics. The body movements of desktop robots are used to enhance online conversations of instant messaging. They are sociable human machine interface that bridges the virtual world and humans in an intuitive and humane manner. ECG is a bio-signal interface between human body and computer. The appearance of highly integrated ECG frontends will soon make it wearable and ubiquitous like mobile phones. Besides serious medical application, ECG can be applied to instant messaging, emotion regulation, and traffic safety.

About Speaker

Dr Xing Shusong has been with the School of Software, Nankai University in Tianjin, China from 2005. He obtained the PhD degree from Nanyang technological University, Singapore. His research interests are in human-robot interaction, human machine interfacing devices, embedded system design, and visualization. He has published more than ten papers and patents. He is the supervisor of Eling Student Society in Nankai University. His students have been the winners of a series of innovation competitions including Microsoft ImageCup.

This free event is for all IEEE members and non-members with the aim of promoting IEEE Signal Processing Malaysia Chapter to Malaysian audience. Abstract:

Moore's Law has been the fundamental driving force behind the PC industry and the microprocessor for nearly thirty years, providing a doubling in system performance approximately every two years. In addition to the more visible measures (e.g. transistors per chip), staying on the Moore's Law trend drives exponential growth in inter-chip signaling bandwidths. Meeting this demand places pressure on interconnect modeling to provide repeated accuracy improvements while handling increased frequencies. This presentation will examine the requirements for printed circuit board (PCB) interconnect models, taking a historical view to demonstrate the growth in modeling requirements through time, and to project future requirements while suggesting areas for high speed modeling research, covering specific modeling issues for printed circuit boards and connectors, such as:

• Copper surface roughness and effects on skin effect loss

• FR4 dielectric weave construction and effects on mode conversion in differential signals

• 3D modeling of plated through holes and edge card connectors

• Dielectric losses at 40+ GHz

Biography:

Howard Heck has 25 years experience working in the electronic packaging and signal integrity. Since joining Intel in 1995, he has focused on R&D of high speed inter-chip signaling solutions in technical and management roles for a number of products, including the Pentium® II/III/IV Frontside Bus, Direct RDRAM™, DDR II and Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) interfaces. He currently leads development of the specifications and interconnect solutions for SuperSpeed USB 3.0 technology. From 1997 through 2009, he was an Adjunct Professor at the Oregon Graduate Institute, teaching High Speed Signal Integrity and Interconnect Design. He is an IEEE Senior Member, is co-author of Advanced Signal Integrity for High-Speed Digital Designs, a graduate level SI textbook published in 2009.

無可否認，有史以來，學術，學識與人才的發展是人類社會發展與進步的推動力。也是因為其基本重要性，在21世紀的今天，尤其在變化神速的亞洲，擴展與深入學術與學識與延攬人才已經是人云亦云的大客題。但是要了解亞洲的今天﹐尤其是華人的東亞﹐我們必須從歷史的角度去探討。今天的亞洲是千年西方與東方千絲萬縷的交流﹐合作與對抗的結果。這個結合可以給我們一些信息關於21世紀亞洲的學術，學識與人才的發展。本演講是吾人在這方面幾十年來的一些淺見。

Abstract

Undoubtedly, throughout history, the driving force to move forward and improve society is the amalgamation of academics, intellects and human resources. As it is of fundamental importance, it is now a much talked about theme in the 21^st century fast growing Asia that there should be ubiquitous and deepening development of academics and intellects as well as proactive search and recruitment of best minds. To understand Asia, especially pertaining to Chinese East Asia, history could be out guiding principle. Today’s Asia is the amalgamation of the convoluted interactions and conflict between East and West. This amalgamation can give us some information about 21^st century Asia. This talk will discuss some personal views about these issues.

國立成功大學資深執行副校長

馮達旋出生於印度的新德里。母親是音樂家，父親是新聞記者。1950年初期，馮全家舉遷至新加坡。馮在新加坡理工學院(Singapore Polytechnic)就讀土木工程兩年後，戲劇性地轉換興趣，投身於基礎科學。馮於1968年取得Drew 大學的物理學學士學位，並於1972年取得明尼蘇達州立大學博士學位。馮於1976年加入Drexel 大學。民國1990年獲選為M. Russell Wehr 物理講座教授。在此之前，馮分別在曼徹斯特大學及德州大學奧斯丁分校從事博士後研究工作。在其成為終身職教授之際，他同時擔任美國國家科學基金會(NSF)的理論物理部門主任，並且亦出任丹麥哥本哈根大學Niels Bohr 研究所以及英國Daresbury 實驗室的客座教授.

從1998年至2000年，馮是SAIC公司，一個跨越多國的富豪500公司的副總裁。在2001年, 馮榮任德州大學達拉斯分校研究部副校長，並兼任物理系教授。馮於該校的職責乃負責執行由校長及教務長所交付的任務，主要包括增強學校研究質量的內涵與深度，同時亦提升該校在國內及國際上的研究信譽。

馮亦獲得了台灣中原大學的友誼獎，同時也榮膺十二所中國大學的榮譽教授，其中包括北京協和醫科大學。他也曾經是美國Los Alamos, 橡樹嶺，布魯海汶三個國家實驗室以及英國的Daresbury實驗室的顧問。2003年馮被委任為南京大學的榮譽董事。2007年被被李家誠基金會委任為汕頭大學的董事. 委任2005-2007年被選為Cellstar公司的董事，該公司代理全球手機，每年營業額達十億美元。2010年馬來西亞國油大學（Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS，亦稱國油工藝大學）委任為學術諮詢委員。其他的榮譽如美籍韓裔科技網路的顧問，南卡大學計算機與工程評估委員會會員，美國教育部分析的評估小組成員之一，國防工業協會科技會的執行委員等.

馮認為他作為教師最首要的成就是帶出了七個博士，六個博士後，並指導了眾多的本科學生。馮曾組織了三十多個國際性會議，每個都獲得了資助。其研究工作從1979年至1995年堅一直得到（美國）國家科學基金會的經費支持。在1995年-1998年間，馮是當時美國眾議院武器裝備委員會副主席Curt Weldon議員的全球技術顧問，專門負責中歐和亞洲事務。

馮的科學文章超過180篇, 編輯達20多本書。馮於1996年榮獲美國物理學會會士，這是該學會最高的榮譽。

馮於2007年加入國立成功大學為資深執行副校長.

ABSTRACT
Prevailing methods of human identification rely mainly on credentials (identification documents and passwords/PIN). However, these methods are not able to meet the growing demands for stringent security in heterogeneous applications like identity management, international travel, government welfare programs, and access control. As a result, numerous person identification applications are adopting biometric technology that automatically recognizes people based on their anatomical or behavioural characteristics. Unlike credentials, biometric traits (e.g., fingerprint, face, and iris) cannot be lost, stolen, and easily forged; they are also supposed to be persistent and unique. The use of biometrics is not new; for over one hundred years, law enforcement and forensic agencies have successfully utilized fingerprints to apprehend criminals or identify victims. But, as biometric technology permeates our society, it faces new challenges. One such challenge is the need to design identification systems for ultra large scale civilian applications such as the Government of India's planned Unique ID project, which is projected to cover a population of over one billion citizens. The design and suitability of biometrics technology for person identification depends on the application requirements with respect to recognition accuracy, throughput, user acceptance, system security, robustness, and return on investment. Therefore, the next generation biometrics technology must overcome many research challenges such as the ability to deal with poor quality biometric data, interoperability, user privacy, system security, and information fusion. This talk will present our ongoing research work on latent fingerprint matching, models for facial aging, template protection, extraction and matching of soft biometric attributes, biometrics of twins, and matching sketches to the corresponding facial images in support of next generation biometrics systems.

BRIEF BIODATA
Anil K. Jain is a University Distinguished Professor in the Departments of Computer Science & Engineering, and Electrical & Computer Engineering at Michigan State University. He received a B.Tech. from IIT, Kanpur (1969) and Ph.D. from Ohio State University (1973). His research interests include pattern recognition, computer vision and biometric recognition. His articles on biometrics have appeared in Scientific American, Nature, IEEE Spectrum, Comm. ACM, IEEE Computer1,2, Proc. IEEE1,2, Encarta, Scholarpedia, and MIT Technology Review.
He has received a number of awards, including Guggenheim fellowship, Humboldt Research award, Fulbright fellowship, IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement award (2003), W. Wallace McDowell award (2007), IAPR King-Sun Fu Prize (2008), and ICDM 2008 Research Contribution Award for contributions to pattern recognition and biometrics. He also received the best paper awards from the IEEE Trans. Neural Networks (1996) and the Pattern Recognition journal (1987, 1991, 2005). He served as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Trans. Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (1991-1994). He is a Fellow of the ACM, IEEE, AAAS, IAPR and SPIE.
Holder of six patents in the area of fingerprints (transferred to IBM in 1999), he is the author of several books: Handbook of Biometrics (2007), Handbook of Multibiometrics (2006), Handbook of Face Recognition (2005), Handbook of Fingerprint Recognition (2003) (received the PSP award from the Association of American Publishers), Markov Random Fields: Theory and Applications (1993), and Algorithms For Clustering Data (1988). ISI has designated him as a highly cited researcher (his h-index is 86). Title: Translational Bioinformatics: From Bytes to Bedside and Back

Abstract:

Cancer is driven by multiple genetic and epigenetic alterations, including changes in DNA sequence, aberrations of copy number, abnormalities of chromosomes, and modification of DNA methylation. Today's powerful and high-throughput technologies have enabled researchers: (1) to characterize these genomic abnormalities, which have largely been studied in isolation, within individual cancer genome; and (2) to survey these changes across large numbers of cancer genomes in great detail. Two major findings revealed from these studies: human tumors are heterogeneous and genomic alterations occur in specific pathways to drive cancer development and progression. These findings have major implication to oncology drug development and cancer treatment. In this talk, I will give an overview on how to develop and employ bioinformatics to integrate these massive data from diverse sources and translate them into meaningful clinical applications.

This week CMS seminar is from Dr. Tan Aik Choon of University of Colorado.

Aik Choon Tan, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Bioinformatics at the Division of Medical Oncology, Department of Medicine, University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine. He also has a secondary appointment at the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics, Colorado School of Public Health. He is a member of the University of Colorado Cancer Center, Developmental Therapeutics Program and a faculty member of the Head and Neck Cancer Research Program.

Aik Choon's research interest is to translate the basic research into clinical trials for personalized cancer treatment by 1) developing novel bioinformatics approaches to integrate and interpret high-throughput and complex biological data sources for biomarker discovery, and 2) devising new computational strategies to identify aberrant signaling and metabolic pathways in tumors. He is the Director of the Translational Bioinformatics and Cancer Systems Biology laboratory (The Tan Lab). He is also the coordinator of the bioinformatics and biostatistics group of investigators working in developing new algorithms and statistical methods to analyze next-generation sequencing data at the UCD School of Medicine.

Aik Choon graduated from the University of Technology Malaysia with First Class Degree in Bioprocess/Chemical Engineering (2000). He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science/Bioinformatics from the University of Glasgow in 2004. Subsequently, he received his post-doctoral training at the Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering (2004 – 2007) and at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (2007 – 2009) before he joined the faculty of the University of Colorado in 2009.

He is an editorial board member of the Cancer Informatics journal, and he is a regular peer reviewer for bioinformatics related journals. He is a member of the International Society of Computational Biology (ISCB), the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

Biography: Dr. Binshan Lin is the BellSouth Corporation Professor at College of Business Administration, Louisiana State University in Shreveport. He received his Ph.D. from the Louisiana State University in 1988. He is a nine-time recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Award at LSUS. Dr. Lin receives the Computer Educator of the Year by the International Association for Computer Information Systems (IACIS) in 2005, Ben Bauman Award for Excellence in IACIS 2003, Distinguished Service Award at the Southwest Decision Sciences Institute (SWDSI) in 2007, SWDSI Outstanding Educator Award in 2004, and Emerald Literati Club Awards for Excellence in 2003. He has published over 210 articles in refereed journals since 1988.
Professor Lin currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of Industrial Management & Data Systems, and Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Computer Information Systems.
Dr. Lin serves as President of Southwest Decision Sciences Institute (2004-2005), President of Association for Chinese Management Educators (2003-2004), President of International Chinese Information Systems Association (2000), Program Chair of IACIS Pacific 2005 Conference in Taipei, Taiwan, Program Chair of Management International Conference (MIC) 2006 in Slovenia, General Chair of MIC 2007 in Slovenia and MIC 2008 in Spain. Professor Lin also serves as the Program Chair of Technology Innovation & Industrial Management (TIIM) 2009 in Bangkok, Thailand, and Conference Director of TIIM 2010 in Pattaya, Thailand and TIIM 2011 in Oulu, Finland. Abstract: Advances in low cost wireless and processing hardware have stimulated a range of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) research and their subsequent deployment in a number of applications. Since cost is an essential factor in any development, their designs are driven according to issues such as restricted memory size, limited computation power and low power consumption. However advanced applications such as those demanded by the medical/health care, military and surveillance sectors require higher levels of network performance supporting time sensitive, guaranteed and secure high quality data delivery. These demanding applications drive the need to enhance first generation WSN concepts.

Biography: Ivan Andonovic, Professor of Broadband Networks, graduated with a BSc (Hons.) in Electronic and Electrical Engineering in 1978 from the University of Strathclyde. He received a PhD in ‘Lithium Niobate Waveguide Devices’ in conjunction with neighbouring Glasgow University in 1982. He is presently the Head of the Centre for Intelligent Dynamic Communications Systems (CIDCOM) at the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Strathclyde University.
He joined Strathclyde in 1985 following several years at Barr and Stroud where he was responsible for the design, manufacture and test of optical guided wave devices. He has held a two year Royal Society Industrial Fellowship, in collaboration with British Telecommunications (BT) Labs during which he investigated novel approaches to broadband networking. Professor Andonovic’s research interests centre on the development of broadband networks, access and home networking and wireless sensor systems. He has edited two books and authored/co-authored six chapters in books and over 230 journal and conference papers. He has been chairman on the IET Professional Group E13, held a BT Short Term Fellowship, Visiting Scientist status at the Communications Research Laboratories of Japan, Visiting Professor at the City University of Hong Kong and Princeton University, USA. He is Topical Editor for the ‘IEEE Transactions on Communications’ and was Technical Programme Co-Chair for the recent ‘IEEE International Conference in Communications (ICC07)’. Prof. Andonovic is a Fellow of the IET, holds Senior Member status within the IEEE and is member of the Optical Society of America.
He was co-founder, Director and Chief Technology Officer of Kamelian Ltd., a high growth technology start-up focussing on the design and manufacture of advanced semi-conductor devices. He was also a member of flagship Scottish Enterprise (government agency for economic growth) establishment team of the Intermediary Technology Institutes (ITIs), aimed at bridging the gap between basic research and company growth. Presently he holds the ITI Techmedia Sponsored Chair in Broadband Networks facilitating the interaction between fundamental research in communications technologies and digital media and pre-competitive development of technologies that will form the input to commercialisation activities in Scotland.

This talk will provide an overview of some of the main ideas in the theory of spacings, i.e. the gaps between successive observations. After reviewing some basic properties of spacings, their use in testing statistical hypotheses and in estimating parameters, will be discussed. Two-sample tests based on “spacings-frequencies” and their relationship to locally most powerful rank tests will be explored, as are some possible extensions to observations in higher dimensions.

ABSTRACT
Modern communications and computing technologies developed independently in the last century. Recent advances brought these technologies into alignment, and have blurred their differences. For example, powerful computer algorithms are at the heart of WiMax, LTE, and other wireless protocols, while Skype enables the Internet to function as a telephone system. Hand held devices like Smartphones and Netbooks evolve toward the common space of portable communications and computing. Blurring will continue until communications disappears as a stand alone service, and becomes an internal element of computing. This trend will drive system selection, applications development and performance parameters for future devices and systems. This presentation covers some of the indicators of progress in the trend, and suggests areas for research and investment.

BIOGRAPHY
Charles Backof is an executive consultant in wireless communications systems and products and has held a number of senior positions in a 32 year career with Motorola. He has extensive experience in research, development, manufacturing and patenting of electronic products. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and the president of IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Board of Governors. He holds eight U.S. patents, and is a licensed Professional Engineer.

Profile:
Professor Paul Roe received his MEng from the University of York in 1987 and his PhD from the University of Glasgow in 1991. He is currently a full professor in the Faculty of Science and Technology at QUT, in Brisbane Australia. At QUT he leads the Microsoft-QUT eResearch Centre, a collaboration between the Queensland State Government, Microsoft Research and QUT which is investigating smart tools for eResearch. Paul also chairs the QUT eResearch working party. He has published over 70 papers and received over $4M in competitive research funding. His research is focussed on smart tools which enable new forms and scales of research, particularly in the areas of distributed computing e.g. wireless sensors networks and end user programming languages.

Projective Space are a collaboration between practioners and researchers from the fields of robotics, computer vision and assistive technology. We are positioned to provide key navigation and interaction technology for the "Service Robotics" industry. To conduct research in autonomous and semi-autonomous robotic systems and implement the results in demonstrations and products for the defence, manufacturing and assistive technology industry sectors.

The current development of Projective Space are the latest innovation of using sensor fusion including mm wave radar in the vehicle following system. The image processing capability are essential for the success. We will share with you some of our experiences in color based texture in visual guidance applications.
