CMS Talk: A Sustainable Model for Fleet Management under Uncertainty: A Preliminary Study

You are cordially invited to the following talk:

Title: A Sustainable Model for Fleet Management under Uncertainty: A Preliminary Study
Date: 7 Nov 2012 (Wednesday)
Time: 1pm
Venue: SD 102, UTAR KL Campus, Setapak, Kuala Lumpur
Speaker: Teoh Lay Eng, Department of Mathematical and Actuarial Sciences, UTAR

Abstracts:
Globally, pollution issue is worsening nowadays and hence more attention is certainly required. In order to fulfil the social responsibility i.e. to preserve the environment, the airlines should concern this issue in their fleet planning. Nevertheless, until to date, there is no available method on how to quantify 'green flight' that could provide guidance to the airlines. Besides, the airlines' profit should not be compromised in fulfilling their social responsibility. As such, how to balance these objectives is interesting to be investigated. Fleet management concerns the supply of service and the operational profits are thus sensitive to the demand, especially under uncertainty. To achieve a win-win situation between the environment and the airlines, a sustainable model is indeed necessary. In response to this, a bi-objective programming model is developed to maximize the operational profit of the airlines while optimizing (maximizing) the green level of the environment. Correspondingly, 'green flight index' will be formulated by considering aircraft emission, noise and fuel efficiency. The developed model is able to determine the number and types of aircraft to be purchased/leased by the airlines economically and environmentally. It is anticipated that this study may reveal some useful insights for the airlines to provide a better service, at a profitable and sustainable manner.
