It couldn’t be a more exciting time to be part of the tech industry right now: other than the usual staples of working in a corporate environment, you can now work on the web, mobile, embedded devices, games, interactive media…
So many options! But wait, you ask yourself, “where should I start?”.
In this talk, Seh Hui will be sharing his experience and perspective of the tech industry and how would you chart your career path. As a bonus, giving you hints in terms of tools and practices that you’d be interested to pick up and set yourself up for your own dream job.
It’s an exciting time to be working in technology after all :).

Biography:

Seh Hui is a programmer for ten years, currently specializing in developing API services and data solutions in Mindvalley.
Landed his first job with Genting after winning merit prize in E-Genting Programming Competition in 2004 and have since worked in both big corporations and start-up environments.
He is also a co-organizer, speaker and proud volunteer for several tech communities and meetups, such as LvlUp.KL (previously known as Webcamp KL) and Python User Group Malaysia.

Description

There are several research assistantship opening available at UTAR's Centre for Computing and Intelligent Systems (CCIS) for motivated candidates who are passionate in understanding and applying data science in various industrial applications, from forestry to transportation.

Scope of Work and Remuneration

• To undertake a specific industry topic and solve the problems by applying techniques in data science, especially in deep learning technology.
• To help the lead researchers in administrative matters to create a conductive environments for researchers.
• Remuneration of RM1500-2500 per month for 12 to 18 months, depending on experience.

Requirements

• Passionate in computer programming, esp. in Python and C/C++.
• Have good mathematical foundations
• Strong interest and/or has working experience in machine learning/artificial intelligence/computer vision/image processing projects.
• Good English written and verbal communication
• Good analytical skills
• Self-motivated, requires minimal supervision, resourceful and willing to learn.

Job Description

• To develop software for video surveillance system with demographics classification.
• To assist the project leader in all works associated with the research.
• Opportunity to be involved in software prototype development of application involving computer vision, image processing and machine learning.
• Gain exposure to cutting edge technologies- AI (deep learning), GPU, Open Source. 
• The RA may register for Master's degree by research with UTAR.
• Remuneration of RM2000-2500 per month for up to 12 months (can be extended up to another 12 months subject to satisfactory performance).

Requirements

• Passionate in computer programming, with good mathematical foundations
• Strong interest and/or has working experience in computer vision/image processing/machine learning projects.

A city that is optimally lit results in many socio-economic benefits enjoyed by the urban population. This sharing session will touch upon what we do at Cosmiqo and some fun (at least in our definition) analytical solutions that we are building.

Biography:

Dr Koh Niak Wu specialises in supply chain analytics, strategy deployment and operations management innovation.
He is part of the team at Cosmiqo International Pte Ltd that drives change and now enjoys an 80 hour work week at his startup to avoid working 40 hour ones in his past lives.
With his cross-functional background, Niak Wu lives in a rather surreal world of convergence that has in its sensor-based systems. He believes in the power of analytics and how it shapes business decisions. Niak Wu also limits his fluid intake so he can stay at his desk longer.

Biography:

Professor Lee Byung Gook received the B. S. degree in Mathematics from Yonsei University, Korea in 1987. He got his M. S. and PhD in Applied Mathematics from KAIST, Daejon, Korea in 1989 and 1993 respectively. He was a researcher in Computer Center of Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science from 1992 to 1993. Besides that, he worked in R&D Center, DACOM Corporation as a senior engineer in the division II Open Systems Lab.
Since 1995, he was the Associate Professor in Division of Systems Engineering. In 1999 to 2000, he went to University of Oslo, Norway for post-doctoral in the Department of Informatics under Professor Tom Lyche.
He is currently a Professor in Division of Computer & Information Engineering, Dongseo University and the Director of BK21 Institute of Ambient Intelligence.

Project Title

Tropical Wood Identification using Deep Learning

Objective

Identification of wood species based on its anatomy is critical to possibly trace the origin of the wood and hence reduce wood smuggling and illegal logging. Automated process in identification of wood species will create a vast applications from this capability.

In this research, we will look into applying deep learning and convolution neural networks, as the fundamental components in this wood identification system. We aim to devise a novel method to create a platform for applying machine learning in solving the very challenging and exciting research frontiers.

Scope of Work

• To review the recent work in vision-based wood species identification
• To devise and enhance deep learning model for textural feature extraction recognition
• To assess the performance of the model
• To create a proof-of-concept prototype of a wood species identification system

Job Description

• Remuneration of RM1500-2500 per month for 12 to 18 months, depending on experience.
• The RA must help the project leader in all works associated with the research.
• The RA must work closely with the sponsored industry partner to complete the research project.
• The RA may register for Master's degree by research or PhD program with UTAR.
